Beginner Tennis Player To Junior Player

If you are embarking on the journey of developing your son or daughter into the next Rafael Nadal or Serena Williams I have few tips that might help you save some money in the process. Tennis is like most individual sports very expensive when trying to fund the training and development of a junior player. . I have three children a son and two daughters that have played in the juniors since they were 7 years old. My son plays college and future tournaments which are entry level pro tournaments. As a result I feel I have a pretty good idea of what it takes . Most parents will start the the tennis process with their children but many will not make it to coveted finish line. In this article I will breakdown the early process of what it takes to get started in tennis to becoming a successful junior player. In part 2 I will discuss what it takes to become a nationally ranked junior and college player and in part 3 I will discuss how to become a pro tennis player.

The first thing a parent of a beginning junior player need to do is to establish what your goals are for your child. Now if this is a child under the age of 10 you probably are making the career tennis goals. Ideally you want the child to want to play tennis , because if they don’t like tennis they won’t be good at tennis. Please be honest about your goals and expectations for your child because this will dictate how much money and time needs to be invested in this process. When I first started tennis my primary goal was to enable my kids get college scholarships.

The New Tennis Player

Let’s start with the beginner tennis player steps . Check your local listings you can probably find a clinic at your local club that offers tennis at least two days a week for two hours a session, this will help introduce your child to the sport. When most players started tennis in the old days they would have to get oversize racquets and play on the standard size courts. This can be very frustrating for beginning players and not fun. So remember when choosing a program choose one that has a 10 and under program . This is a new program that has been developed by the USTA to help make tennis more fun for the kids. With the 10 and under program the balls are pressure-less, the racquets are smaller and light weight, they also play on smaller courts. Please keep in mind this is really basic stuff and it will probably not be as technical as is necessary to develop proper stroke mechanics. If the goal is just to be introduced to the sport this should be good. These clinics will vary in cost but on average you can look to spend $200 to $300 for eight 2 hour group lessons on average.

The Junior Player

Ok so you want your child to be better than average. Well now you are talking a little more money and a little more time. Most boys and girls that compete in tennis, or the juniors as we refer to players under the age of 18 that are not pros practice year round. The junior game is similar to the [professional|pro} game ,the season never ends. So in the summer you hit outside and in the winter depending on where you live you hit inside. To become a good junior your child is going to have to practice between 8-10 hours a week at the least, and this is assuming you start at an early age. There are four aspects to training that must be utilized to be a good junior. Group clinics which you go to once a week for two to three hours, this will run you about $500 dollars per 8 week session. You will need to invest in Private lessons which are from $70-80 dollars for a one hour lesson with a reputable pro at your neighborhood racquet club. Private lessons are very important because the one on one attention is needed to master proper stroke mechanics and technique. Please make sure that the [tennis pro|coach} has a USPTA certification. In addition to this I recommend you get a basket of balls and learn how to feed balls as a parent. You will need to invest an additional 5-7 hours of Ball feeding yourself. Once your child has developed all the strokes and can keep balls in play I suggest your child also begin to Play Tournaments . Start off with one tournament a month and as they get better they can play two a month. This should be repeated yearly, and remember the key to being successful is consistency. Lindsey Vonn’s Focus On Technical Skiing Will Define Her Season

It was close to becoming a tradition for Lindsey Vonn to end each ski season with a World Cup trophy proclaiming her the best all-around skier in the sport. But last season’s nail-biting finale — with its tabloid-style intrigue and last-minute letdown — was a shock to the seemingly invincible Vonn, who couldn’t seem to accept that, sometimes, things don’t go as planned.

But Lindsey Vonn isn’t one to back down from a challenge. She’s a consummate sportswoman, and winning is her ultimate goal.

Not winning — like at the end of last season — shocks Vonn like nothing else can. She’s not worried about launching herself down an icy mountain at 80 miles per hour, but she’s scared by the thought of not giving 110% for the sport she almost single-handedly redefined.

That’s why she’s making radical changes to not only her equipment and training regimen, but to her lifestyle.

Gone is the close friendship with her rival Maria Riesch. Vonn was disappointed and angered by Riesch’s failure to stand up for the sport at the end of last season. She thought Riesch put her own interests above that of the Women’s World Cup in general, and she wasn’t happy about it.

Gone too, is Lindsey’s single-minded focus on simply surviving the technical skiing events. No longer will she ski to avoid a DNF (did not finish). This season, she’s skiing to either win, or to crash in the attempt. Her new strategy in slalom and giant slalom is intended to make the most of her amazing talents without losing sight of the fact that there are girls on the tour who are physically more well-suited to these sorts of races.

In fact, this new aggressive strategy seems to be paying off, since Vonn won the first race of the season: the Soelden giant slalom. Her aggressive attitude is mirrored in her equipment: tactical gloves instead of normal ski gloves. While Lindsey never won a giant slalom before, she placed on the podium in the last GS race (last season), and expected to beat Riesch in the final race of last season, before it was cancelled amid controversy. Her decisive victory at Soelden over Riesch and the rest of the field shows that she’s not scared to challenge the best tech skiers in the world.

And what’s more, it throws down the gauntlet right at the feet of Maria Riesch.

Vonn’s single-minded focus is changing her living arrangements too. She’s no longer worried about finding hotels or rentals during the ski season. Now, she’s using a motor home, just like Bode Miller has been known to do. This cuts down on the hassle of moving to a new venue each week, and it increases her recovery from exercise. It leaves more time for training and strategy sessions with her coaching team. This is a proven way to keep the focus on athletics.

And probably most important, Lindsey expects her physical conditioning to be even more impressive this season than it’s been in the past. Her off-season training is said to have been more rigorous than usual — and that’s saying something when you consider that Vonn is known as the hardest-working woman in the sport. While her bitter rival Riesch seems to have lost strength (and stamina, based on her poor showing in Soelden), Vonn seems more powerful than ever.

So Lindsey Vonn’s new attitude — throwing caution to the wind and shooting for a podium finish in the tech events — along with her new training focus, living arrangements, and social upheavals, promises an exciting season of skiing during which there’s sure to be plenty of ups and down and hopefully a victory for the US skier who is already acclaimed as the best female ever to race in World Cup events.
